Is your boiler whistling, banging, gurgling or droning? When your boiler is making noise, it doesn’t always mean something is wrong – some sounds are perfectly normal. Based on official manufacturer advice, this guide explains what each noise points to, what you can safely check yourself and when your boiler needs professional diagnosis and repair.
Which boiler noises are normal
Vaillant says it’s normal for a boiler to make some noise, for example when the burner ignites or when the pump circulates water around the burner and heat exchanger. According to boiler manufacturer Ideal Heating, these are normal:
- A quiet whirring when the heating is on – that’s the pump circulating water;
- A low, quiet rumble on start-up – the flame heating the water, much like a gas hob burner;
- Occasional clicking – switches and valves inside the boiler turning on and off.
Ideal Heating recommends getting used to your boiler’s normal sounds so that you notice anything unusual straight away.

Boiler making noise: what each sound means
1. Whistling or banging – the boiler is kettling
According to Vaillant, water in the boiler circuit is typically heated to around 70°C. If the flow slows down, the water heats too quickly and reaches boiling point (100°C). Steam forms, pressure in the system can rise and you hear a whistle, just like a kettle – hence the name “kettling”. Kettling can also cause banging. Ideal Heating says a banging noise from a boiler is most often traced back to kettling.
Vaillant lists these common causes:
- Limescale in the heat exchanger and pipes – especially in hard water areas;
- Low water pressure in the system;
- A faulty thermostat – the boiler heats water more than it should;
- Circulation problems – a damaged pump or blockages in the pipework.
Baxi notes that sludge in the system is one of the signs behind gurgling and kettling; radiators that are hot at the top but cold at the bottom are another typical sign.
What to do: Vaillant warns not to try fixing a kettling boiler yourself – it should be inspected by a professional. If limescale is the cause, Vaillant says the system needs a chemical clean or power-flush, and faulty parts need replacing.
2. Gurgling – air in the system
According to Vaillant, gurgling means air is trapped in the system and mixing with the water. It usually isn’t a serious problem, but it should be resolved soon. The simplest fix is bleeding your radiators (see the steps below). Ideal Heating says that if this doesn’t help, you need a professional – and since air shouldn’t normally get into the system, a good engineer will also find out how it’s getting in.
3. A loud drone, like a plane taking off
Vaillant says this is usually caused by a faulty pump, although not always. Pump replacement should only be done by a qualified engineer.
4. Constant humming
According to Vaillant, humming can be caused by mains water arriving at too high a pressure (making valves in the boiler or pipework hum), a pump moving water too fast, or the bearings in the boiler fan. Checking this means removing the boiler casing, so it’s a job for an engineer.
5. Whooshing – a blocked air path
Vaillant names two common causes: a blocked air intake pipe, which runs from the back of the boiler to the outside, or a dusty air filter inside the boiler. If you hold your hand near the outside end of the pipe and can’t feel any air movement, it’s probably blocked. You can carefully remove an obvious, visible obstruction; anything else should be checked by a professional.
6. Grinding
Ideal Heating says a loud grinding noise is almost certainly a faulty pump. Switch the system off and call an engineer – a boiler can’t work without its pump and could even overheat.
7. Pipes banging when you turn on a tap
According to Ideal Heating, if the banging comes from the pipes rather than the boiler, it’s often water hammer – a sudden change in water flow, for example when you open or close a tap or shower. It’s common, but hard or frequent hammering can cause damage, so have it checked.

What you can check yourself
None of the steps below require opening the boiler casing:
1. Note the noise and the display
Note what the noise sounds like, where it comes from (boiler or pipes) and when it happens – on start-up, while heating or when a tap is opened. If there’s an error code on the display, write it down. This helps a technician find the cause quickly.
2. Check the pressure gauge
Vaillant says system pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar – low pressure can lead to overheating and kettling. Check the exact value in your boiler manual. If the pressure keeps falling, read Boiler pressure dropping – causes.
3. Bleed the radiators if you hear gurgling
Following Vaillant’s instructions: turn the heating on and let the radiators warm up. Feel each radiator – if part of it is cooler, air is probably trapped there. Turn the heating off and let the radiators cool. Put the radiator key into the bleed valve, hold a container underneath and turn the key anti-clockwise until you hear hissing. When the hissing stops and only water comes out, close the valve clockwise. Finally, check the boiler pressure again.
4. Look at the air intake pipe outside
If the boiler is whooshing, Vaillant suggests checking whether anything is blocking the outside end of the pipe. Don’t reach inside the pipe or open the boiler casing.
Is a noisy boiler dangerous?
Vaillant says a noisy boiler is usually not an immediate danger – boilers have safety mechanisms that shut them down before they become dangerous. However, this isn’t 100% guaranteed, so have the boiler checked by a professional as soon as possible. According to Vaillant, loud banging, continuous humming or kettling sounds can point to problems that lead to breakdowns or safety issues. If you smell gas, don’t use open flames or electrical switches, open the windows and contact the gas emergency service immediately.
How to prevent boiler noise
Vaillant and Ideal Heating both say regular (annual) servicing prevents many of the problems that cause noise: the engineer spots and replaces worn parts in time. Baxi adds that the engineer should also check the system water for sludge during the service. More: Annual boiler service – what it includes.
When to call a boiler technician
- The boiler whistles, bangs or sounds like it’s boiling;
- You hear a loud drone, constant humming or grinding;
- Gurgling continues or soon returns after bleeding the radiators;
- The noise comes with an error code, pressure changes or a leak;
- The pipes bang hard or often when a tap is opened.
