If your boiler pressure keeps dropping and the gauge needle falls every few days, water is escaping from the system somewhere or a component is not working properly. This guide explains the likely causes, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a boiler repair technician.
Why boiler pressure drops
According to official advice from the boiler manufacturer Vaillant, the most common causes of pressure loss are:
- A small leak – in the system pipework, radiators, valves or inside the boiler;
- Natural wear and tear – system parts wear over time;
- Pressure not set correctly – for example, it was not properly restored after maintenance or repairs.
Signs of low pressure include radiators heating unevenly or a loss of hot water. Many boilers also show an error code for low pressure.
What pressure should the gauge show
According to Vaillant, the boiler pressure gauge should generally read 1–1.5 bar. Below 1 bar is considered low, and you should avoid raising the pressure above 2.5 bar. The exact range depends on the model, so always check your boiler’s manual.

What you can safely check yourself
The steps below do not require opening the boiler casing and are safe for an owner:
1. Switch the boiler off and let it cool
Check the pressure with the boiler off and cool – the reading is more reliable and there is no risk of burns.
2. Note the gauge reading
Write down the pressure and watch it for a few days. If it dropped once and then stays stable, it may be the result of bleeding radiators or maintenance. If it drops regularly, there is probably a leak in the system.
3. Look for visible leaks
Inspect the bottom of the boiler, pipe joints, radiator valves and the filling loop. Look for drips, damp patches, rust or limescale marks.
4. Topping up – only as your manual describes
If the pressure is below 1 bar and your boiler’s manual allows the owner to add water through the filling loop, add water slowly while watching the gauge. When finished, close the valves fully and check that nothing drips. If the pressure goes too high, Vaillant advises that excess water can be released by bleeding a radiator. If you are unsure, leave this step to a technician – Vaillant also recommends having an expert do it.
What only a technician should do
Do not open the boiler casing. Any work on the gas pipe and gas valve, the burner, the electronic control board or other internal boiler components must be done only by a qualified technician. If you smell gas, do not use open flames or electrical switches, open the windows and contact the gas emergency service immediately.
When to call a boiler technician
- The pressure keeps dropping even after topping up – according to Vaillant, this may indicate a leak or a faulty component;
- You notice water under the boiler or on the pipes;
- The boiler shows a low-pressure error code and shuts down;
- The pressure rises above 2.5 bar;
- You are not sure which valve is the filling loop.
